Troodos

Troodos offers spectacular scenery all around. Fascinating sights of Byzantine monasteries and churches on mountain peaks are overwhelming and nestling in its valleys. Also its charming mountain villages are clinging to the terraced hill slopes.

The remarkable Troodos mountain range extends across most of the western side of Cyprus. During summer, it offers cool sanctuary and lovely trails for walks through fragranced pine forests. In winter you can engage in various winter sports like ski runs.

During the Byzantine period, the area became an imperative center of Byzantine art. Churches and monasteries were built on the mountains away from the intimidation of coastal invaders. Kykko Monastery is one of the most famous wealthiest monasteries in the whole Cyprus. Founded in 1100 and devoted to the Virgin Mary, it possesses one of the three surviving icons attributed to St. Luke. The icon, enclosed in a shrine of tortoiseshell and covered in silver gilt & mother-of-pearl, stands at the front of the iconostasis.
